Why Healthy Gums Matter

Strong gums are essential for maintaining good oral health. Thankfully, strengthening your gums only takes a few easy steps similar to other steps necessary to manage dental health care.

Why do healthy gums matter?

Oftentimes, people focus on keeping their teeth strong and healthy without giving much thought to the gums. But having strong gums is vital to overall oral health. After all, it isn’t only about having straight, white teeth. Maintaining good oral health strengthens your gums and helps prevent gum disease, which can cause severe damage to the mouth if untreated.

About Gum Disease

Gum disease, also called periodontitis, begins when plaque builds up on the teeth and gum line. Plaque causes bacterial infections that damage your teeth, gums, and bones. Gingivitis, which occurs when your gums become inflamed, is one of the first signs of gum disease. Other symptoms include:

  • Constant bad breath

  • Losing your adult teeth

  • Swollen or tender gums

  • Gums that bleed easily

Luckily, gum disease is preventable, and you can slow or stop its progress by taking the right steps to strengthen your gums. To treat gum disease, a hygienist will clean your teeth and gums to prevent bone damage. Severe gum disease may require surgery for treatment.
